Ask me all about the special visit we had from the 2nd grade class! Today we went over to Mrs. Mahar's room for a special visit from Mrs. Carpenters 2nd graders. They have been practicing a readers theater on The Grinch! We were lucky enough to watch as they read each line from The Grinch! It was so much fun having this visitors and listening to all the hard work they put into this readers theater!
Ask me all about how many kids like marshmallows in their hot chocolate! Today in math we were given a question to ask our peers: Do you like your hot chocolate with marshmallows. We had to go around the room and ask our peers if they did or did not and record their answer. We used tally marks to show how many students said yes and no. We also recorded our data by coloring in boxes to match our tally marks. It was so interesting to find out that 7 students like marshmallows in their hot chocolate and 4 students didn't! Ask me all about my writing goal. Today we discussed the importance of choosing a goal in writing and how this can help make our writing better. We applied this goal to our how-to make hot chocolate books and were surprised with the effort we put forth to try to meet this goal. It wasn't easy but we were eager to do our best and keep trying!
Ask me all about our author visit! Today we were lucky enough to meet Mark Kimball Moulton and hear one of his stories! He shared the book Change the Word Before Bedtime to us today. It was so amazing to meet a real author and listen to him read us one of his stories. We were so eager and excited to hear his work and truly enjoyed this story. Mr. Moulton asked us as he was reading to listen for the rhymes within the story and we worked really hard to find them. We also loved the message of this story which is how the little things in life can change the world in a big way. For example saying hello to someone or smiling at someone can help change the world. Thank you Mark Kimball Moulton for joining GCS today and reading us this lovely story!
Ask me all about the sixth grade Lego robotics! Today we took a trip to the gym to listen to some of the sixth graders share how they created a way to move a penny with the push of a computer button! It was so interesting to watch and listen to the four different groups who were successful in creating a system to get their penny to move. One group connected their penny to a wheel and when they pushed the computer key an object spun, which propelled the penny on the wheels a short distance. We even watched as one group used a long tube and had their penny connected to a ping pong ball, their penny went the farthest! Ask me all about working with a writing partner! Today we had two targets in writing: 1) I can make a list of ways to work with a writing partner and 2) I can model the correct way to work with my writing partner. It was so much fun sharing our ideas of ways to work with our writing partner. We came up with a great list! We said writing partners should sit EEKK (elbow to elbow, knee to knee), partners should have eyes watching, ears listening, voices quiet, and body still, we also said that partners should provide feedback. We learned that feedback is saying something to our partner about their writing. We can tell out partners something that they could make better, or something that we thought they did really well with.
Ask me all about the game double compare. Today in math we learned a new way to play the compare game that required us to stretch our minds. This time we were required to pull two number cards and put the two numbers together! Our partner did the same thing, and then we had to compare each of our totals to see who had more! It was challenging but so much fun. We used a double ten frame to help us in case our numbers were bigger than 10. We love learning new math games!
Ask me all about "movement" words! Today we continued to talk about movement words that could help move our how-to writing from step to step. We had some great ideas of different words that we wanted to try to incorporate in our writing: First, next, second, then, and third, finally, and last. We were so excited to incorporate these into our writing and were persistent throughout the process. We can't wait to wrap-up our how-to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich book and move onto a new one!
Ask me all about penguins! Today we met two targets during our reading mini lesson: 1) I can share things I know about penguins and 2) I can ask questions about thing I would like to learn about penguins. We were so proud and excited when we realized that we had met both of these targets! It was so surprising at the amount of information we already knew about penguins, For example, "They are black and white.", "They can't fly.", and "They eat fish." We also were still so curious to learn more about penguins. We wondered, "How do they survive?" "How do they eat their food?", and "Why are they black and white?" We are so excited and eager to try to answer our questions tomorrow!
