Ask me all about the new Math game make a train race! Today we practiced the skill of adding on by making a train and racing our partner to the end. We had to roll a die and build a train with the same amount of connecting cubes. Then our partner went and did the same thing. We continued to roll the die and add on that number our connecting cubes until we reached the end of the yard. It was so much fun adding on cubes and racing our friends!

Ask me what a prediction is. Today during our Reading mini lesson we learned what a prediction is and how to make a prediction. We learned that a prediction is something that you think. In Reading when you're making a prediction about a text you use the pictures, the title, and what you have read to help you make your prediction. Today we made a prediction about the text Mash the Potatoes and shared what we thought this text would be about. One friend shared, "I predict this book will be about a boy and his dad making mashed potatoes for a holiday, because the pictures showed them making mashed potatoes together and a turkey." The rest of the class agreed with what this student said and shared the same reasons why they had that prediction. We were so surprised with what great prediction makers we were today!
Ask me all about using a number line to add on. Today we had a number line that we sprawled across the floor and had the numbers 1-20 on it! We were each given two number cards and had to use the number line to help us put these two numbers together. It was so much fun demonstrating the action of putting numbers together and finding a total! We LOVED getting up and walking along the number line to find our total!
Ask me all about the strategy of using a KWL chart. For the past three days we have been focusing on each section of the KWL chart. We learned that K stands for things I think I know, W stands for things I want to learn or questions I have, and L stands for things I have learned after reading about a topic. We used the text Animal Coverings as our inspiration and surprisingly thought we knew a lot of things about this topic! One friend shared, "I think tigers have fur to keep them warm." The next day we looked at the cover and pictures from within the text and shared out some things we wanted to learn about this topic. Miss Walker said, "I wonder if there are different types of animal coverings?" Today we were able to read the book and learn some brand new things about this topic! Did you know that crabs have armor as their covering? Ask me all about a number line! Today Miss Walker hung up a string for us and we had to create a whole class number line! We were each given two numbers in a range from 1-22. We had to take turns going up to the string and placing our numbers where we thought they belonged on the number line. It was tough at first because we had a blank line and really had to think about our numbers and what we know about them before placing our number on the line. It was so much fun working as a team to put the numbers in sequential order! We can't wait to use a number line again tomorrow! Ask me all about my writing strategies! We have been busily writing away at our how-to books and are so excited to share these books with you! We have learned some new strategies to help us make our stories even better and easier to read! Today we worked really hard on saying our words first, writing them, and then rereading our work to make sure what we wrote matched what we said. We were so surprised at the difference it made in our writing and how easy it was to read! We even are learning to use lowercase letters in our writing and can refer to our alphabet chart to help us form these letters! We are so eager to share our How-To Make a Pizza book with you!
Ask me about the word empathy. Today we had a brand new word of the day called empathy. We had no idea what that word meant, so we had our Sesame Street friends help us understand it. We learned that empathy is understanding how someone else feels. We discussed how if I fell down and hurt myself the children could imagine or understand how I was feeling at the moment. We all promised to try and show empathy to each other.
Ask me all about how-to text features. Today we added two more features to our chart after again looking at the book Shadow Puppets. Today we looked closely at the pictures and decided that it's important to have these in our texts to help teach the reader about our topic. We even noticed that some of the pictures had labels and said they also help to teach the reader about our topic. We decided today to focus on adding labels to our how-to make a pizza book and were so eager to share our work!
Ask me all about the how-to text feature I noticed today! We looked at the text Shadow Puppets today and had to notice a feature that a how-to book has. We all noticed after reading that title that it is such an important feature. We even were able to share with a friend why the title is so important: "It tells what the whole book is about." We even added this feature to our Learning From A Mentor How-To Text chart. We also made sure that our how-to make a pizza book had a great title to tell the readers what our book will be about. We can't wait to discuss another feature that how-to books have and apply it to our own! We love being how-to authors! Putting in a lot of effort on their second step of their how-to make a pizza book. They even remembered their movement words: next or second! Ask me about my book cover! Today in writing we discussed the importance of a book cover when you are writing a book. We said as readers we wouldn't want to read a book that didn't have a cover, because we wouldn't know what the book would be about. We shared the three important qualities that a book cover have: title, author/illustrator, and an illustration to show what the book is about. We then brainstormed some ideas for our how-to book title and discussed what a good title would be a some titles that wouldn't be good for this book. We decided as a class that How-To Make a Pizza was a great title for our book, because we are writing about how to make a pizza. We even discussed that a great illustration would be a big pizza! We can't wait to get started on our pages of this how-to book!
Ask me all about book buddies! Today our book buddies came to visit and they read a story to us and we also read to them! We even were able to write about our favorite part from each book. Our buddies were so impressed with our reading and writing skills. They could not believe what we could do! I can't wait to share my writing at home with you!
