Ask me all about a plants life cycle! Yesterday during Science we began by discussing all of the things we thought we know about plants. "Plants need water, sun, and soil. Plants grow from the ground. Plants come from different seeds." We also took the time to share out any questions we had about things we wanted to learn about plants. "Why do we need plants? How do you keep plants healthy? What are petals for?" We had a lot of questions popping into our minds about plants and were eager to learn more about them. We then watched a BrainPop video on the plant life cycle to learn how we have plants and how they continue to grow. It was very interesting to learn that they start as seeds, turn into a sprout, the sprout then grows into a seedling, which grows into a young plant, and after time becomes an adult plant. Today we revisited the plant life cycle and created our own! We were able to cut, paste, and color the cycle in order and we even were able to illustrate our own plant life cycle. We are so excited because tomorrow we are going to create our own terrariums and observe the plant life cycle over the next few weeks!

Ask me how I made my writing better all on my own! Today we revisited the idea of how when we think we are done, we've only just begun. We reviewed the chart and added some new things to it that we could be doing all on our own. We said that "Writers reread their work, check in with a partner, add labels and more to their illustrations, add speech bubbles, and even to fix parts that are hard to read." We shared that sometimes our papers have so many eraser marks that it's best to grab a new piece of paper and rewrite our work so it's easy to read. We all then went off and applied our new learning so we can become independent writers and worked the WHOLE time! At the end we all were so eager to share out the ways that we made our writing better. We can't wait to practice this again tomorrow! Ask me all about a hexagon! Today we looked at hexagons and were challenged to try to fill them in using different shapes! We were amazed at all the different ways that we were able to create a hexagon, using triangles, diamonds, trapezoids, and other shapes! We were able to try this out on the SmartBoard and even completed the same activity all on our own! Ask me about all the shapes and ways that I created a hexagon! We are loving learning about shapes.
Ask me all about the problem I have noticed in the classroom or school! This week we learned that we are just like the Lorax, in that we never ever give up on trying to make a positive change. Just like the Lorax kept trying his best to convince the Oncler not to continue chopping down the truffula trees, we are trying to convince people in our school to help fix our problem. Many of us want to make a change to kids running down the hallways or cleaning up our classroom closet. We all started by first writing a book about our problem, reasons why it's a problem, and our fix it idea. Then we learned that one writing piece on our problem will not make a difference and that we need to write more and more about this problem to get people to listen. We began first by writing letters, some of us wrote them to Mrs. Rossbach, Miss Walker, and even the whole classroom or school! Then we began to create posters to create attention to our problems and ways to fix it. It was so much fun writing and writing about a problem and realizing that we can make a change!
Ask me all about our special visitor! Today Mr. Drapp came in to visit both Kindergarten classrooms! He read us the story Finding Spring, which was about a little bear Maurice who was searching for Spring. We thought it was silly because there were snowflakes coming down and Maurice thought that was Spring. He finally realized the snowflakes were actually a sign of Winter and when he awoke from his hibernation it was Spring time. Not only did Mr. Drapp read us this wonderful story, but he also let us ask him questions about his job. We were all very curious as to what a superintendent does. We learned that his job is to oversee all four of the schools in Region 6 and that he helps make sure teachers have everything that they need. We also learned that he is the one who calls our phones to say if we have a snow day, early dismissal, or delay due to the weather. We had so much fun listening to the story and learning about our superintendent. Thank you Mr. Drapp!
Ask me how to be a super reader! Today we discussed many ways to be a super reader and why it's important to be a super reader. We created a list of all the ways to be a super reader and were impressed by all the ways we came up with of how to be a super reader. We said super readers read all the time, they challenge themselves to solve unknown words and read lots of books, they use all of their reading strategies, and they never give up. These were just some of the qualities we listed of how to be a super reader. Tomorrow we are so excited because we actually are going to practice being a super reader with our just right books!
Ask me all about circles and rectangles! Today we explored these two specific shapes and shared everything we noticed about them. Some of us said, "Circles are round. Rectangles have straight sides. Circles remind me of the shape of a pizza!" We also noticed that circles are curved and round, while rectangles are straight. We even pointed out that rectangles have 2 short sides and 2 long sides, just like our SmartBoard! We also watched a Storybots video on circles and rectangles, which we all really enjoyed. Ask me if I chose a rectangle or circle today to draw a real word object! Ask me all about shapes! Today we read a book called The Shape of Things, which was about using shapes to make realistic objects. We loved how the illustrator used a square to make a house, a triangle to make a boat, and a diamond to make a kite. We also shared some other things we could make ourselves using a shape, a rectangle could be a classroom table, or a road. We even were able to create our own images using a shape! Ask me what shape I chose and what I created using it.
Ask me all about how I used my pencil as a magic wand today! In Writing we learned how we can make a difference by writing about problems we see and ways to fix them. We shared many problems we have seen in the classroom or school that we wanted to make different. Many of us said running the hallway is a problem because it is not safe and people could get hurt. We shared out ways we could fix this problem and decided that it would be better if people walked instead of run. We enjoyed practicing the steps of 1. See a problem, 2. Think, and 3. Write. Ask me what my problem that I saw in the school is and how I plan to fix it! "I don't like when I see people punching others at recess." "I don't like when kids say mean things to other kids."
Ask me about the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Today we read another one of Dr. Seuss's books and were challenged to listen closely for rhyming words and try to figure out what we thought this book was about. We also were able to make our own fish bowls with some red fish and blue fish! We even practiced adding our fish together to find how many all together we had in our fish bowl. It was so much fun. We just can't get enough of Dr. Seuss's stories! Ask me all about our fourth grade visitors! Today we had two special fourth grade friends come to our classroom to perform a reader's theater of Green Eggs and Ham. It was so fun watching and listening to them recite the book! They even had some props!
