Ask me all about our special assembly today! We were lucky enough to have Forbes Flyers visit our school today! The Forbes Flyers are a competitive jump roping team who travel all over the world and compete! They performed in front of the whole school and showed us their jump roping skills! It was amazing to see all they could do with their jump ropes!
Ask me all about the butterfly life cycle! Yesterday we shared out things we thought we knew about the butterfly life cycle and questions of things we would like to learn. Many of us were wondering how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. We even received our own butterfly life cycle book that we were able to illustrate and read! We learned the different stages a caterpillar goes through before becoming a butterfly. We were amazed at how the caterpillar changes inside their chrysalis! Today we each received a retelling wheel where we retold the life cycle to a partner. It was so much fun using words such as first, next, then, and finally again. We also were creative and imagined what we would look like if we were a butterfly and illustrated this. We even wrote about what the caterpillars are doing inside of a chrysalis. We LOVE learning about the butterfly life cycle!
Ask me how I kept track of all the chairs in our classroom! Today we were challenged to figure out how many chairs were in the classroom and find a way to keep track of the ones that we had counted. We were creative and used our individual whiteboards as clipboards and walked around the classroom with our recording sheet. Some of us kept track of our work by making circles, triangles, and even numbers! After all that counting we then had to go back and check our work and record the number of chairs we found. It was so much fun being able to move around the classroom and search and find a total! Ask me all about the parts of a fiction story. Over the past few days we have been reviewing the parts of a fiction story and learned that it is important to be able to identify these parts because it helps give us a better understanding of the story. We learned the five main parts of a fiction story are the characters, setting, problem, solution, and plot. We know the characters are the people, animals, or creatures who are in the story. The setting is where and when the story takes place. We learned that the problem is something that goes wrong and the solution is how it gets fixed. Lastly we talked about the plot and how the plot is all the events that take place in a story. Yesterday we started reading the book Stellaluna and were challenged to be active listeners and find all five parts of a story. Today we then finished this wonderful book and were asked about each section. Boy was Miss Walker surprised when we were able to identify each part from the book! Ask me to tell you who the characters are and what the setting is!
Ask me all about how I can help to keep our earth clean! In celebration of Earth Day we tossed around a blow up earth and shared all the ways we thought we could help our earth. We shared out picking up trash, throwing our things in the garbage, cutting down on how much paper we use, and to recycle. Then we even were able to watch a video on Brain Pop about what it means to reduce, reuse, and recycle. We were amazed at how important these three things are to helping to care for our earth. We learned by doing one small thing that it can make a big change! We also each received our own little booklet about how we can help our earth and read it together! Ask me to share this book with you tonight! We really enjoyed learning about all the ways we can help protect our earth and why it is so important! Ask me all about my opinion of what the boy should do. Today in Writing we continued to focus on persuasive letters. We began first by closing our eyes and picturing if we were outside on the playground and saw an ant what would we do? Many of us said we would save the ant by moving it to a different location so no one else would step on it. Then we actively listened to the text Hey Little Ant and stopped and talked about different parts. Our job was to decide what the little boy should do, squish the ant or leave it alone? After the story we shared out our opinion on the topic with a partner and our reasons to support it. Take a look at our chart we put together to share all of our reasons! We can't wait to write a persuasive letter to the kid tomorrow about our opinion! Ask me how I am an independent writer! For the past couple of days we have been reviewing spelling strategies to help us write tricky words. We watched and laughed as Miss Walker acted helpless not knowing what to do to spell a hard word and yell out for help. Instead of telling her the answer we shouted out strategies to help her figure out how to write this tricky word. Some ideas were, "stretch it out like a snake or rubber band, use the word wall, use things around the room." We then watched as she took these ideas and used them to help herself write this tough word. We even used whiteboards and tried the strategies together on the carpet to write the word backpack. We were amazed at how we could we use these strategies all on our own without shouting out for help. Then we were challenged to use them in our persuasive letters and were able to! We were bursting with excitement to share out the tricky words we spelled using the strategies all on our own! Ask me what hard word I wrote and the strategies I used to help me!
Ask me all about how I am a problem solving wizard! Today in Math we whipped out all of our strategies we have learned to solve a word problem. We read it together 3 times, went back circled important numbers and underlined important words. Our job today was to try and solve how many balloons were at a party if there were 5 friends and each had 2 balloons. Boy oh boy was this a tricky problem! We first shared out what we were trying to solve and then got right to work on our whiteboards. Many of us made diagrams to match what the words said and were able to find the answer. We also shared out how it is okay if we did not get the right answer, but it was important that we persevered and did not give up! Ask me all about our special visitor! Today we learned all about how we have different types of weather. We made our very own weather maps to observe how we get cold air from the North Pole. We learned that the Earth spins or rotates which is how we get cold air and warm.We observed as a boiled egg was pulled into a container by the cold air searching for the warm air. We learned all about clouds and rain. We even were able to see a science cloud made and were able to see some lightening! It was so much fun learning about weather through exploration! |
