Today we had the opportunity to visit this amazing place known as Chapter 126. This is actually a gym facility that accommodates individuals with a disability. We learned and experienced first hand what it would be like if we didn't have use of our legs. We learned how to move forward, backward, turn, and stop the wheelchair and we even had the opportunity to conduct some basketball drills as well! We also experienced what it would feel like if we were blind and learned how blind individuals can still play sports with some equipment modifications. For this station we used blindfolds and learned how some balls have bells or beeping sound placed into them so you can catch or hit them. It was so interesting and eye opening to have to rely on our sense of hearing and touch to try and catch the ball that was being rolled. We also experienced what it would be like to lift some weights if you were blind and learned how to use a walking stick and be guided around. It was overall an amazing experience! Take a look for yourselves!
Ask me all about our special visitor today! This morning we were lucky enough to have a special visitor Nature Nick, who brought along some friends for us to meet. We learned all about special animals from different parts of the country. We were able to learn all about an owl, a monkey, an alligator, and many more species. It was so interesting to learn facts about these animals and be able to see them in person. Ask me what my favorite animal was and why!
Ask me what the volume of a liquid is! Yesterday in science we took a deeper look at one state of matter...liquids! We each made a prediction about if we thought a liquids volume would change from one container to the next. The majority of us did think that the volume would change from one container to the next. We then watched a short clip from Discovery Education to review the three states of matter, but zoomed in on the points about liquids. What we learned was fascinating! After watching this clip I posed the question again if the volume of the liquid would change from one container to the next. Many of the students said, "No it would not because a liquid has a definite volume." although there were still a few students who were skeptical about it. We decided to get 3 different containers and had one beaker filled with liquid. We poured the liquid into each and then poured it back into the beaker each time and were amazed to see that every time it was poured back into the beaker it hit the mark labeled 7. It was so interesting to learn that liquid can take or form to any shape, but the volume of it never changes!
Ask me all about our new reading unit! Today we had a drum roll to introduce our brand new unit in reading, which is learning all about how to be a nonfiction reader. We learned all about how to do extra "brainy" reading by paying attention to all the details and sharing out what we noticed and then taking all that information to gather new knowledge about the topic. It was so much fun digging deeper into nonfiction texts with our small groups and noticing and learning new information about a topic. Ask me what I noticed and learned from my nonfiction text!
Ask me all about our class contribution to the Veterans Day Assembly. Today we had an assembly to honor the veterans and each grade level prepared something to perform or give to them to show their gratitude. We prepared a reading Veterans Day and were broken into 3 groups, each group was assigned a paragraph to read aloud to the veterans. We practiced throughout the week our speaking and performance expectations and did a fabulous job meeting those expectations. We also learned about the structure of a friendly letter and wrote one for the veterans. We learned a friendly letter contains a heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature. Ask me what I wrote in my letter!
Ask me all about how to partner read and the purpose of it. Today we started discussing a new station that will be incorporated into our reading workshop...PARTNER READING! We first began by sharing out the purpose of partner reading, which is to help us improve as readers. We then created a list of expectations for partner reading; read the same text, actively listen to text, help each other solve tricky words, and take stop and jot notes to show understanding, among other things. We even discussed what some of these expectations should look like and then practiced partner reading with our reading partner.
