Ask me all about the Harvest Parade and party!
Ask me all about our special visitor Mr. Matt. Today we had a special visitor from Susan B. Anthony who taught us all about being a good friend. He first started by reviewing some of the types of programs that the Susan B. Anthony project has taught before (taking five, personal space, bucket filling). Mr. Matt then read is the text Llama Llama and the Bully Goat, which we all really enjoyed. Then we talked about what would do if we had to deal with a someone who was not being a good friend. We had some great ideas: ask them to please stop and tell them how I feel, tell the teacher, walk away, or ignore them. Then we had the opportunity to draw and write about how we would be a good friend. Today we revisited one of our new favorites Those Darn Squirrels and noticed how the author made the whole story click together. We noticed that throughout the whole text he continuously had Old Man Fookwire say, "Those Darn Squirrels!" and had the squirrels keep teaming up to devise clever plans. In the end Adam Rubin brought the squirrels back together to team up and plan something nice for Old Man Fookwire, after they had driven all the birds away.
Ask me about how to determine an author's intention and powerful writing! In reading we have been stopping, noticing, and thinking about how an author makes us feel and how the author does that. Then in writing we have been trying to incorporate some of the craft moves we have seen author's apply to their writing to ours. Today we read aloud Those Darn Squirrels and we stopped and noticed certain parts where the author intended to make us laugh, which happened a lot in this text. We shared what was powerful, why was it powerful, and how it was powerful. We noticed that the author did a great job of bringing the characters to life by describing their likes, dislikes, thoughts, feelings, and the use of dialogue between other characters. We also noticed that the parts where we laughed out loud were powerful because the author used language or descriptions that were really silly and made to be ridiculous. For example, the author described squirrels as being "fuzzy geniuses" and described all the silly ways that they were made to be geniuses. We decided that in writing we were going to try and bring our characters to life by the use of dialogue, description of likes, dislikes, feelings, and thoughts. We love learning to become deep thinking readers and powerful authors!
Ask me all about our new game collect 25 cents! We have been learning all about coins, sharing out their properties, and amounts of each. We even learned a new song to help us keep track of the amounts of each coin:
Penny one cent, penny one cent. Nickel five, nickel five. A dime is worth ten cents, a dime is worth ten cents! A quarter twenty-five, a quarter twenty-five. After learning all about coins and their amounts we were taught a new game called collect 25! The goal of the game is to collect 25 cents first! The thing that is so much fun about this game and requires us to stretch our minds is we can trade our coins in. Each player rolls and dice and takes that many pennies, if they receive 5 or 10 pennies they can trade them in for nickels and dimes. If a player has 2 nickels they can trade those in for 1 dime until they get all the way up to making 25 cents! We absolutely loved this game! Ask me about the balloon poke experiment! Today in science we had the opportunity to explore 3 balloons filled with different types of matter. We are just beginning our study of matter and have started to show what we know. One balloon was filled with air, one water, and one had water and was frozen. One student came up and popped each balloon and we watched and discussed what happened to each. It was amazing to see the changes that took place to the matter inside each object! After we observed and discussed the changes that happened we then recorded our work. We even were challenged to identify if we could which one we thought was a solid, liquid, or gas! We can't wait to learn more about matter!
Ask me how I am going to grow my writing muscles! Today we learned that writing is just like dancing or any sport BECAUSE...just like in dancing or in a sport you grow your muscles. At first the class thought this was funny...how in the world can you grow writing muscles it's not like in dancing or football where there is ACTUAL muscle growth, but it's different. We thought of ways we could grow our writing muscles and eagerly shared our ideas with our classmates. "Practice writing everyday!" "Write for longer amounts of time." "Try new strategies out with your writing." We had so many great ideas and decided that today we were going to grow our writing muscles by setting writing goals! Now we knew that writing muscles aren't like the muscles in our body, but you can tell that your writing muscles are growing when you can write for longer periods of time, write longer stories, writer funnier or more beautiful pieces, and many many more ways. We took a deep look at the 2nd grade writing checklist and discussed each area that is described on it. Then we even read through Mrs. Lafferty's piece and used the checklist to determine her areas for growth. After practicing the use of the checklist we put it to work with our own writing pieces and shared a finished story with our writing partner. We determined our areas for growth and narrowed it down to 2 goals for writing. We can't wait to jump in tomorrow and improve our pieces and grow our writing muscles! Ask me what my 2 goals are!
Ask me how I can fill up someone's bucket! Today Mrs. Lutz came in and shared how today was National Smile Day and she thought it would be great to discuss how to be a bucket filler, ways kids can sometimes be bucket dippers, and how we can deal with someone who does dip our bucket. We shared some ways that people can dip our buckets, by saying hurtful words, ignoring you, not including you, etc. We also shared out how we feel when somebody dips our buckets and ways to handle these situations. We said, "Tell the person how it makes you feel when they did that, walk away from them to cool down, if problem continues tell an adult." The best part was sharing out all the ways to be a bucket filler...and BOY there were a lot! Saying good morning or hi to someone, helping a friend in need, including someone who has been left out, giving someone a smile, and many many more ways. Mrs. Lutz told us our job today was to work on filling up someones bucket and that she would be checking in with us to see what we did throughout the day to do this!
